Adrenaline Sports > MountaineeringMountaineering Mountaineering is a great way to test yourself against the elements and your own physical capabilities. Mountaineering, mountain climbing or Alpinism (a European term) consists of walking, hiking and rock climbing up, that's right you guessed it – mountains! Mountaineering can be split into three main categories, trail climbing, rock climbing and ice climbing. Rock and ice climbing both require great gymnastic and technical abilities but the latter of the two should only be negotiated by the more experienced climber. Trail climbing is the easiest of the types and is more suitable for climbers of different ages and abilities. Participants walk and hike along trails to the top of relatively small mountains whilst taking in spectacular views. Rock climbing takes place on steeper and more difficult slopes, and will generally be on larger mountains. Participants use specialist equipment and climb using their hands as well as their feet. Thick rubber soled boots, rope, safety equipment and steel spikes known as pitons are all needed to aid climbing. Ice climbing is generally undertaken by the more experienced climber and is only undertaken on extremely high mountains whose peaks are above the timber line. Specialist equipment for this type of climbing includes the use of ice axes and crampons (attachable boot spikes) to penetrate hard snow and ice. |
